Discovering Your Spirit Animal Part 2

Search Your Dreams

A common place for people to find their spirit animal is within their dreams. Animals tend to feature heavily in dreams thanks to the characteristics we associate with them. It may be the case that the animal you see whilst you sleep may not actually be your guide. Some however may have guided you in the past or be your current guide now. Whatever the animal may be, it is worth taking note of the dream and attempting to interpret the message as they can represent important emotions and feelings that can help you settle your stresses and worries. They can often represent feelings that you haven’t fully processed, your underlying drive and basic instinct, important events in your life, emotions or aspects of your personality that are considered hard to control or wild and instinctual guidance. You can find out about what certain animals usually represent by using a dream dictionary.

Discovery Through Meditation

Meditation is a great way to connect with your spirit animal, when done successfully you may even be able to connect with several of them. When we meditate, we enter a state of trance that allows us to enter a different state of mind. It is a practice that has been proved to reduce stress and allow us to heal both our body and our minds. In this state we can use our imagination in order to journey inwards, this will help you to visualise your spirit animal and may even allow you to understand the message that your guide is trying to relate to you. If you are new to the art of meditation it can at first be quite difficult to get into, there are however plenty of excellent services out there that can help you to get to grips with the practise such as Headspace and Calm. These are apps on your phone that will teach you how to achieve a meditative state, they usually demand a membership fee but they usually offer a free trial that will allow you to grasp the basics.

What Next?

Once you have discovered your spirit animal, you’ll want to find out exactly what this means. What does it say about you? The first thing you should do is simple, learn as much as you can about the creature. This is pretty straight forward, you can either read up on it in books or online or maybe try and find some documentaries that involve it (I’ve no doubt David Attenborough will have covered it at some point). If you see the animal in person pay attention to its behaviour.

What Next?

Essentially you want to ask yourself a number of questions to get to the bottom of the animals meaning. Before you ask yourself anything, try to make a list of the animal’s qualities and attributes. Once you’ve done this quickly as yourself the following questions:

  • In what way do these traits relate to yourself?
  • How does this animal connect to your life and experiences?
  • If it could speak, what would it say to you?

Make sure you answer these questions quickly and think more about them after, you should be able to discover the message that your spirit animal holds.
